4Kids looking to sell itself after years of unprofitability

0

Well, would you look at that? The company that brought us Yu-Gi-Oh!, Shaman King, Ultimate Muscle, and the best dub of One Piece ever is looking for some way to stay afloat. According to ICv2, the company is currently evaluating its assets, looking for "alliances with strategic partners" or simply a sale of the company.

4Kids isn't solely an anime licensor and distributor, but that's what we know them for best. They handled the anime distribution for shows aimed at kids, and in the process, butchered One Piece, taking the show to a new level of incompetence by editing out cigarettes, guns, and just about anything else that might not be considered "kid-friendly."

The company stopped making a profit back in 2005, and from 2006 until now, they've burned through $100 million in assets, leaving them with about $10 million left. It looks like they're out of time, and have to do something -- because there's no way they can magically turn this boat around themselves.

So, who knows what will happen with them? Perhaps Viz will acquire the rights to the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and start distributing that? They had acquired Pokemon from them a long while back in order to manage that empire, and so I don't see why they wouldn't try it with this series too -- especially if it's on the cheap. I would expect that their series would get raided from them, and then 4Kids will be left to rot. It's not like they have a good brand image, anyways.
